On-Site Wastewater Treatment System (OWTS) Requirements

Hinsdale County requires an On-Site Wastewater Treatment System (OWTS), commonly known as a septic system, inspection for all property sales and membership transfers involving property with a septic system. This requirement applies to all transfers, including family transfers.

The inspection must be completed by a National Association of Wastewater Technicians (NAWT) certified inspector. The purpose of the inspection is to verify that the septic system is functioning properly, identify any deficiencies, protect groundwater, and help protect both buyers and sellers from unexpected septic system issues.

If deficiencies are found, repairs may be required before final approval or may be subject to a county-approved corrective action plan.
